Architecture

Crete  has many fine examples architectural jewels. Venetians and Turkish invaders have influenced the architecture of the island and many buildings of this period are still standing today and embellishing Crete. For defensive reasons, Venetians have fortified a lot of villages and towns, using skilled Italian engineers; also for defence they built a series of superb castles as well as numerous towers that can be found today all over the countryside of the island.

Western Renaissance also influenced the architecture of the island of Crete Greece. This architectural influence can still be seen in many of the houses and in various churches and monasteries. During the late 1980s, a rebellion against modernism and a longing for more traditional styles influenced the design of modest housing in Greece. Builders began to borrow freely from a variety of historic traditions, offering neo-eclectic houses that were 'customized' using a mixture of features selected from various construction techniques and styles. These homes are sometimes called postmodern because they borrow from a variety of styles without consideration for continuity or context. However, neo-eclectic homes are not usually experimental and reflect the artistic vision you would find in a truly original, architect-designed postmodern home.

Postmodern houses combine a variety of  features like:
  • Sense of 'anything goes'
  • Forms filled with harmony, irony, ambiguity and contradiction
  • Juxtaposition of styles Blend of traditional, contemporary, and newly-invented forms.
  • Exaggerated or abstract traditional detailing.
  • Local materials and traditions used or considered.

Combining surprise with tradition, our homes include numerous references to historic architecture. Look closely and you will see typical ancient Greek, light colored borders between the tiled roofs and the main structure, between floors and all around the arches. Stone is widely used to provide the necessary traditional touch, and as a reference to the indigenous materials used.
